John Spink, M.S.
Mr. Spink is a Certified Packaging Professional (CPP), has a BS/MS from the
Michigan State University School of Packaging, is a Faculty Instructor at the MSU
Food Safety & Toxicology Center, and he is also pursuing his PhD in Packaging from
MSU. John developed and now teaches on-line graduate classes (“Packaging for
Food Safety” and “Food Protection & Defense – Packaging Module”), and the “Future
of Sustainability” module for Criminal Justice 491 Environmental Enforcement. In
addition, John is Co-Principle Investigator for the Food Safety Policy Center funded
grant to research “Business Case for Anti-Counterfeit Systems Research in Food”.
His career spanned 12 years across Chevron Corporation, he stayed integrated with
the packaging industry both through MSU (guest lecturing at the MSU School of
Packaging, as well as in the graduate business schools at U. of Houston and Rice)
and by using his network to engage customer companies through the packaging
function. He’s always had a foot firmly planted in technology and a foot firmly
planted in Sales & Marketing. His wide range of Chevron experiences include: New
Package Development, membership on the first company wide Waste Management
Reduction Team, Minimization policy and implementation, Package Filling Plant
Manager, Tech Rep for Industrial Oil, National Account Manager for Polyethylene,
$100mm Alliance Manager (w/ Bassell, a Basf/Shell JV), Sales Manager of a Chevron
funded B2B dot-com start-up, and Consultant in Energy Professional Services.
Further work experiences also include a two-years as Sales Manager/ Category
Manager at a $100mm healthy lifestyle/ sporting goods company which sold directly
to the Clubs/ Mass/ Discount/ Et al.
For the State of Michigan, John serves as the Founder/Chair of the Packaging Sub-
Committee for the “Agriculture & Food Protection Strategy Team” (bioterrorism).
The subcommittee has focused on raising the awareness of packaging solutions to
food safety risks. One major research report managed was “Traceability of Fresh
Fruit and Produce – Overview” (FDA’s Food Traceability regulations). Current major
research projects are to “Review and Assess the Counterfeit Food Threat”, and
“Assess Options for Traceabilty and RFID.”
John is very involved in Sustainable Packaging initiatives and is a frequent guest
lecturer on the topic at the MSU School of Packaging. Other work includes assisting
Corporations to both define “sustainable sustainability” and to successfully evolve
their business and research plans to meet initiatives by Wal-Mart and others.
John is President of York Partners LLC -- a Management, Sales & Marketing, and
Packaging Consulting Company that specializes in innovation and execution in the
Business-to-Business marketplace. Current Packaging Consulting work ranges from
review of policy to retail audits to package review and development for Fortune 250
Corporations. Current Management and Marketing consulting focuses on managing
the retail market strategy through product development through sales execution for
start-up and micro-cap corporations.
